FORKBEARD FANTASY SHORT COURSES 2009 - 2010
In 2009 and 2010 Forkbeard Fantasy will be running a series of one, two and three-day courses based at their Waterslade studios in the heart of rural Devon. The courses will provide access to inspiring techniques, expertise and the vast array of facilities available at Forkbeard’s creative base.

Animated Props & Basic Automata – Two-day course

This course provides a guided tour through the most useful materials for propmaking and their specific use. This is followed by a general introduction to ways of animating props with mechanical, manual and electrical energy. Much of the time will be spent experimenting with what has been particularly inspiring for the individual students.

The Arts of Animating – Two-day Course


This workshop gives hands-on experience in the wide range of animation techniques used by Forkbeard in their films, theatre shows and interactive exhibitions over the years. These include 2D, claymation, pixillation , sand, shadow, 16mm scratch etc etc. and inventive opportunities of combining them. Over the two days you each get to make a short film.

Who will run the courses:

Chris Britton , co-founder, performer, writer, animator and maker of film installations.

Tim Britton, performer, film-maker, scriptwriter, sound designer, cartoonist, animator and maker.

Penny Saunders specialises in constructing mechanical sets, puppets and costumes, as well as electronic installations and creatures for the exhibitions. She is the set-designer, co-writer and lighting designer for Forkbeard’s theatre shows.

Ed Jobling, performer, sound engineer and film-maker, also specializes in film projection and sound installations.

Robin Thorburn is an experienced lighting designer, cameraman and editor for over 25 years with credits as diverse as "TFI Friday" "Bremner, Bird & Fortune" and "Newsnight". He has been nominated twice for a BAFTA and won a Golden Rose of Montreux. He has had long experience in lighting and photography and digital and film post-production for Forkbeard shows.

Film Interaction for Stage, Screen & Gallery – Two-day Course


An exploration of the dynamic between film and performance, which in its simplest form, is the trick of merging from stage to screen and vice versa.  A two-day course which gives practical experience in a variety of our most successful experiments in this field. This course provides new and exciting ways of working with these techniques for artists, performers, drama teachers, community workers, art therapists, and people working in fields such as special needs or young offenders.

Digital Editing Using Final Cut Pro HD – Three-day course
The course will cover capturing footage, basic editing, adding transitions and effects, compositing, adding text and graphics, speed manipulation and audio editing, and will particularly emphasise the artistically valid editorial decisions of post production by using material generated by the students themselves. All courses are run using Apple Macintosh computers and are designed to meet the needs of beginners and more advanced users alike. A copy of ‘Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro HD’ by Diana Weyn will be given to all participants. There are 4 places available on each course.

Advanced Compositing (Using Shake) – Three-day course


An introductory course on high-end compositing using the application ‘Shake’. This course is specifically aimed at first-time users who, although familiar with non-linear editing systems such as Final Cut Pro, wish to learn more about advanced compositing. The course covers:

A copy of the Apple Pro Training book ‘Shake 4’’ by Marco Paolini will be given to participants. There are four places available on each course.

Please note: this course is not aimed at compositors already familiar with equivalent workflows such as Nuke, Inferno etc.
