Forkbeard Fantasy Short courses 2007-8

In 2007-8 Forkbeard Fantasy will be running a series of one, two and three-day courses which will provide access to inspiring techniques, expertise and the vast array of facilities available at Forkbeard’s creative base.

Art of Animating – One-day Course
This workshop will examine and give hands-on experience in the wide range of animation techniques used by Forkbeard in their films, theatre shows and interactive exhibitions. These will include 2D drawn animation, claymation, pixillation of actors, animating found objects, a simple introduction to blue-screen keying, use of collage and cut-outs and scratch film. There will also be inventive opportunities to combine several or all of these techniques for a finished article. A variety of materials and equipment will be available for use. Participants will devise and film their own animation sequence.

Creative Sound for Stage, Screen & Gallery – One-day Course
An opportunity for participants to investigate some of the different recording techniques Forkbeard have used over the last 30 years, ranging from reel-to-reel to digital technology. The course will provide instruction in inventive ways of capturing specific sound effects for different purposes, including exhibition pieces such as peep-show boxes, mechanised sculptures, stage shows, animation and film. Participants will also learn how to edit and lay down their own sound track. There will be two opportunities to attend this course in 2008.

Film Interaction for Stage, Screen & Gallery – One-day Course
An exploration of the dynamic between film and performance, which in its simplest form, is the trick of merging from stage to screen and vice versa.  A one-day course which gives practical experience in a variety of our most successful experiments in this field, and provides suggestions of how to adapt these to participants own creative practice.

Puppetry & Automata – Two-day course

This two-day course provides a guided tour of Forkbeard’s astonishing array of giant marionettes, sculptural costumes, mechanised peep show boxes and props will illustrate the inspirational range of possibilities in this area. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques and materials and construct their own creation under the expert guidance of the company’s artists. There will be two opportunities to attend this course in 2008.

Digital Editing Using Final Cut Pro HD – Three-day course
The course will cover capturing footage, editing, adding transitions and effects, compositing, adding text and graphics, speed manipulation and audio editing, but most importantly it will centre on the creative methodology of digital post production resulting in artistically valid editorial decisions. All courses are run using Apple Macintosh computers and are designed to meet the needs of beginners and more advanced users alike. A copy of ‘Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro HD’ by Diana Weyn will be given to all participants. This course will be limited to four participants.

Forkbeard Fantasy Summer Schools 2008
We will be holding two residential Summer Schools in 2008: these courses will take place between Friday 27th June - Friday 4th July and Friday 11th – Friday 18th July. Further information about the courses and how to apply will be posted on our website in the near future.

Who will run the courses:

Chris Britton is one of the principal performers and writers of the work but also a maker of film installations, specializing in creating interaction sequences for live performance.

Tim Britton, also a performer and film-maker, is the main scriptwriter and cartoonist and animator in the Company.

Penny Saunders specialises in constructing mechanical sets, puppets and costumes, as well as working ‘living’ electronic installations and creatures for the exhibitions. She is the set-designer, co-writer and lighting designer for Forkbeard’s theatre shows.

Ed Jobling, another performer, specializes in film projection and sound and provides technical support to the project

Robin Thorburn is an experienced lighting designer, cameraman and editor, and has long experience in production, lighting and photography, digital and 16 mm post-production for Forkbeard shows.
